Open Door Housing Near Capacity

Housing Forward, Open Door Housing, Maywood, Supportive Housing, Housing First

Original post from August 27, 2015. The program has since reached capacity.

Open Door Housing, a permanent supportive housing program for individuals who are homeless and have a disabling condition, launched in October of 2013. With 65 apartments to be filled, it was expected that the program would not reach capacity until sometime in the summer of 2016. However, the demand for service-supported housing was overwhelming, and working closely with multiple landlords in the area, case managers were able to fill the program much more quickly than anticipated. This process was also facilitated by congregation and community groups, who donated dozens of House to Home Kits, ensuring that every client whose homelessness was ended had the household items they needed to regain stability.

Today, 81 individuals (veterans, families and the chronically homeless among them) in 63 apartments are stably housed. We expect the final two units to be filled in the next few weeks. The benefits of permanent supportive housing have been widely documented, and our clients have been no different. Once housed, these individuals no longer have to worry about day-to-day survival, and are able to take major steps forward in their lives. Whether it's increasing their incomeimproving one's health, or simply personal development, the positive outcomes cannot be disputed. We're excited for those in the program, and looking forward to continued success.
