Lifestyle Changes with Open Door Housing
When our clients live on the street or in the shelter, they have to spend every day focusing on survival. Food is important to this survival, but there isn't enough time and aren't enough resources to make healthy eating a priority. As a result of this, health deteriorates, medical conditions worsen and more trips to the emergency room are necessary.
For one of our Open Door Housing clients, Thomas, moving into an apartment was an opportunity to focus on cooking his own meals and losing weight. He was hoping to do this in an effort to reduce the amount of medication he was taking for his blood pressure. After two months in his apartment, Thomas has lost 11 lbs. and succeeded in reducing the amount of medication he needs. Without supportive housing, it is unlikely that Thomas could have taken control of his health. He is currently looking forward to learning new recipes and continuing his journey to stability.
