Statement on CTA Blue Line Shooting: Addressing the Urgent Need for Safe Housing

Teal text on a white background reads: Statement on CTA Blue Line Shooting

We are heartbroken by the senseless violence that took place on Monday near the Forest Park Blue Line station, and we extend our condolences to the loved ones of those who were killed.

This tragedy is a devastating reminder of the realities that people face when they do not have a safe place to sleep. This event underscores the urgent need for compassionate and effective solutions to address the root causes of homelessness. Today, we grieve with our community and renew our commitment to a future where every person is valued and safe.

Our commitment to addressing homelessness is rooted in the belief that housing is a fundamental human right and that every life holds inherent value.

This year alone, Housing Forward’s Street Outreach team has engaged with more than 300 individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness in the 26 communities we serve. These individuals may be staying in cars, on the street, or on public transportation. Our Street Outreach Specialists provide essential support, including food, water, personal hygiene kits, and clothing. As trust is built, our staff assess needs and connects individuals to case management, supportive services, and referrals. However, transitioning people off the street and into shelters—and from shelters to permanent housing—requires sufficient shelter beds and affordable housing availability.

Ending homelessness is an ambitious vision that we cannot achieve alone. We urge policymakers and political leaders, supporters, and the broader community to come together and help us expand prevention, response, and stability services so that every person has a place to call home.
